Set on 103 acres of manicured lawns and wooded parkland in Middletown, Connecticut, the Wadsworth Mansion at Long Hill is a grand Beaux Arts country estate built in the early 1900s. It has the elegance of a Gilded Age mansion with the space and natural beauty of a private park, and it’s a dream to photograph. See it in action in Danika & James’ late-summer Wadsworth Mansion wedding.
The mansion’s floor-to-ceiling windows fill the interior with soft, beautiful light. It’s perfect for getting-ready photos, dress details and first looks with your bridesmaids. The grand staircase is a showstopper for bridal portraits, and the columned terrace and portico make a classic backdrop for the wedding party.
Outdoor ceremonies on the lawn, framed by florals with the mansion as a backdrop, feel timeless and romantic. Receptions can take place in the Beaux Arts ballrooms or out on the expansive terrace overlooking the grounds, and on a summer night, dancing under string lights outdoors is pure magic.
One of my favorite spots at Wadsworth is the wooded parkland surrounding the estate. The tall pines create natural cathedral-like frames and soft, filtered light, perfect for romantic couple portraits that feel worlds away from the reception, even though they’re just steps from the mansion.
Between the bright white interiors, the open lawn, the deep shade of the pine grove and the glow of an outdoor dance floor at night, Wadsworth offers a little of every lighting situation. I balance window light indoors to keep whites crisp and skin tones natural, use the shade of the trees for flattering portraits, time couple photos for golden hour on the lawn, and add off-camera flash after dark so the string lights and the energy of the party both shine.
